TechForm
Background
In 1985 the Racing Services Bureau (RSB) which was purchased by RISA in 2003, the Victoria Racing Club and National Ratings Pty Ltd (NR) jointly developed a model for measuring the quality of individual horse performances on a numerical scale. Since then, the Australian Horse Rating System has been used to rate the quality of millions of individual horse performances throughout Australia. The Performance Ratings assigned to individual runs are on a kilogram scale.
Performance Rating
Performance Ratings have a range of applications. For example these ratings have the ability to determine trends in the performance of a single horse and compare past performances of different horses.
Techform Rating
A particular application of Performance Ratings is the calculation of Techform Ratings. The Techform Rating for a horse combines the performance ratings of past runs into a single number. Taken together, the Techform Ratings for the horses in a forthcoming race provide a scientifically-based prediction of the finish of the race. The highest-rated horse always receives a Techform Rating of 100, with the other horses receiving lower ratings according to past form. Techform Ratings are entirely computer-generated and have no human intervention.
On average, the top Techform rated horse wins in approximately 27% of metropolitan races.
On average, the winner is in the;
- top three rated horses in approximately 55% of races
- top five in approximately 70% of races.
There was another striking illustration of the predictive power of Techform Ratings in the 2006 Melbourne Cup.
The top 5 Techform rated horses were;
